Police announce recruitment drive
WARWICK- Chief of Police Colonel Stephen McCartney and Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that the Police Department recruitment drive will be held from March 3 through March 31.
In addition to advertisements in newspapers, including the Providence Journal, the Warwick Beacon, the Providence American, and En Espanol, a Spanish-speaking officer will discuss the recruitment efforts on WPMZ Poder radio.
In order to allow the department to reach a wider pool of applicants, the Internet will play an increased role in recruitment efforts. Military websites, as well as the Providence Journal’s JobsRI website and the state Department of Labor and Training’s site, netWORKri, will post recruitment information.
The Warwick Police Department website, www.warwickpd.org, has a link through the “employment” section to information on recruitment. It also allows applicants to complete a preliminary application. These preliminary applications must be turned in to the Police Department before March 31, 2008. In addition, there will be a “Career Night,” which is scheduled for April 3, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Shapiro Auditorium at Toll Gate High School, 575 Centerville Road.
Qualified applicants must be between 21 and 35 years old and a United States citizen with a minimum of 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, or proof of five (5) years of continuous military reserve service, or three years (3) of active duty. Those with three years (3) prior law enforcement or corrections experience, who do not have the requisite college credits, will also receive consideration and are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must also hold a valid drivers license, be of good moral character and successfully complete a selection process, which includes a physical agility test, a written exam, oral interviews, and a thorough background investigation.
Schedule of Recruitment Process
April 3, 2008 - A “Career Night” will be hosted by the Police Department in the Shapiro Auditorium at Toll gate High School, 575 Centerville Road at 7 p.m. Members of the Police Department will present information regarding the recruitment process and review the physical fitness test. They will also be available to answer any questions about the recruitment effort.
April 7 and April 9, 2008 - A physical fitness test will be conducted at CCRI’s Knight Campus in Warwick. The Police Department will assign testing times and dates to the applicants. This physical fitness agility test is the same agility test mandated by the R. I. Municipal Police Academy for acceptance. All five phases must be successfully completed in order to advance to the written exam. A positive photo I.D., such as a driver’s license, and a physician’s note must be presented at the time of the agility test. This note will be provided to applicants.
April 19, 2008 - The written exam will be given at 10 a.m. at CCRI’s Knight Campus. A $25.00 non-refundable administrative fee must be paid by a personal check or money order at the time of testing made out to the City of Warwick. An exam of 70% must be attained in order to advance to the oral interview.
April 21 through May 2, 2008 - Oral interviews are conducted.
Once the recruitment process is concluded, an eligibility list will be created by combining the written and oral test scores. The final score determines placement on the eligibility list by ranking the scores from highest to lowest. The eligibility list remains in effect for two years or until it is exhausted. Candidates who place on the eligibility list will be notified as vacancies occur.
